Abstract
Abstract Landau theory is applied to explain the transitional sequence in liquid crystals. First, we recall concisely both the symmetry of different liquid crystal phases and the physical nature of induced order parameters. Then phase diagrams are derived on the basis of Landau energy functions. Different couplings are introduced to explain the experiments. The diagrams described are concerned with the symmetry change from nematic liquid crystal to smectic liquid crystal.
