Abstract

The continuity equation for the coupled diffusion in multicomponent systems is applied for the binary compound. Its consequences and the general expression for the interdiffusion coefficient in a binary system are discussed. The important new information is the rate for formation of the compound within the product layer, diffusion zone. In multicomponent systems the local production (precipitation) of the new phases within the diffusion zone results from the proposed interdiffusion mechanism.
