Abstract

Coupled-channels calculations were performed for $^{54}\mathrm{Fe}$($\ensuremath{\alpha}$,${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{0}$)$^{54}\mathrm{Fe}$ and $^{54}\mathrm{Fe}$($\ensuremath{\alpha}$,${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{1}$)$^{54}\mathrm{Fe}$* in the region of the giant quadrupole resonance. Reasonable agreement with the data was obtained. The wave functions were then employed to calculate the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ capture cross section. This calculation suggests that the capture cross section is nonresonant. The implications for decay modes of the giant quadrupole resonance are discussed.NUCLEAR REACTIONS Coupled-channels calculation; alpha scattering on $^{54}\mathrm{Fe}$; alpha capture to $^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$; giant quadrupole resonance.
