Abstract
A new geometry for an optically bistable device is proposed. It is based on the intensity-dependent phase shift produced at reflection on a three-layer resonant nonlinear structure analogous to the frustrated-total-reflection cavity. It is shown that optical bistability may occur at lower incident power than in the nonlinear frustrated-total-reflection device. Other potential advantages are briefly discussed.
