Abstract

A study of the dynamic structure (3D)-foundation-soil interaction is presented in this paper, in which finite elements (FE) and boundary elements (BE) are used. The structure and foundation are represented by the FE, and the soil by the BE. The coupling of both kinds of elements is accomplished through equilibrium and compatibility considerations along the soil-structure interface. Through numerical studies, the influence of the discretization of traction-free surface of soil, and the asymmetry of the dynamic stiffness matrix K F (BEM) is discussed.
