Abstract

In the late fifteenth century, the reforming policies of Jean de Cirey, abbot of Citeaux, caused a severe constitutional crisis in the Cistercian Order. Opposition to the mother house was led by Jean de Virey, abbot of Clairvaux. The battle was fought at the papal curia, and before the Parlement of Paris, where a lawsuit began in 1483.1 Cistercian historiography has been greatly enriched by this dispute, for the Claravallians scoured the archives for material to support their case. Many important documents were copied, and their texts survive only because of the use made of them in the lawsuit.
