Abstract

Public statistics play a vital role in fostering and furthering knowledge, which provides grounds for decision-making. However, efficient utilization of statistical data depends on whether they meet the criteria of reliability, regularity, timeliness, spatial as well as temporal comparability and availability of data at different spatial scales. Given that many countries have been experiencing dynamic growth and internationalization of the second-home phenomenon – influencing many areas of life and human activities – there are increasing expectations as regards public statistics. The scientific community and decision-makers increasingly expect current public statistics to satisfy their demand for high-quality and comprehensive data. Can the Polish statistics satisfy this new demand? This paper explores the terminology and definitions used to identify second homes in Polish statistical data collections and it, in an international comparison, evaluates whether and to what extent Polish statistics play a serving role to the research community on second homes.
