Abstract

The article is aimed an attempt to understand the personality and activities of the Countess Alexander L. Tolstoy — one of the most extraordinary women of Russia and Russia Abroad in the 20th century. Details of her biography and titanic charitable activity are described. In 1939 she created a Committee to Aid all Russians in Need Outside Russia, soon renamed the Tolstoy Foundation for Russian Welfare and Culture with its branches in different countries. She helped thousands Russian refugees and émigré to enter United States and become a part of American society. The article based on the archive documents of the Tolstoy Foundation in the USA.
