Abstract
Since the 1960s the pattern of population change in New South Wales has contained a marked growth in coastal regions. This is attributable to residential migration and to employment generated mainly by the expansion of tourism. In explaining the change it is suggested that an appropriate framework exists in the concept of Counterurbanization. A discussion of the concept is followed by a description of trends in New South Wales.
