Abstract

This paper is aimed principally at practitioners in the field of crime prevention. It looks at the available evidence of the success of the Secured By Design scheme in countering household burglary. It describes how the scheme itself has evolved over the past decade, and notes what householders and professionals have felt to be the important aspects of the scheme. Some recommendations are made for immediate improvements. Finally, the paper considers what is needed to judge better exactly which aspects of the SBD scheme may be reducing household burglary.
