Abstract

ABSTRACTForty years ago A.D. Wallace asked whether a countably compact, cancellative topological semigroup is a topological group. We will prove that for various types of spaces Wallace's problem has an affirmative answer. This is done by showing that the most promising candidates for counterexamples do not admit cancellative topological semigroup structures.
