Abstract

Measurements of the Coulomb excitation probabilities of the first 2 + states in 70Ge and 76Ge have been made with 4He and 16O projectiles. Using the theory of the multiple Coulomb excitation process the values of the B( E2, 0 + → 2 + and the static quadrupole moment of the 2 + states were deduced. The values of the quadrupole moments depend on the choice of the sign for the matrix element of the E2 operator to the higher 2 + states. For either choice of this sign, the values obtained are small compared with the rotational values.
