Abstract

A large class of nuclear structure phenomena and properties stemming from the action of the Coulomb force is reviewed. The isobaric multiplet mass equation, isospin forbidden decays, isospin mixing, Coulomb displacement energies, and widths of isobaric analog resonances are considered. The role of the isovector monopole resonance as a mediator of second-order Coulomb effects contributing to all the above phenomena is discussed in detail.
