Abstract

Garratt, Ingram, Rand, and Sawalani (2007) comprehensively reviewed research on the specificity of effects of cognitive therapy on depression, as well as the mediating mechanisms of these effects. Comparing their findings with those of a similar review by Whisman (1993), it seems that progress in this area has been slow. Several suggestions are made for accelerating progress in understanding mechanisms of change in cognitive therapy: (a) more work on measurement development; (b) more efficient use of the existing database; (c) disaggregation of complex treatment packages; and (d) more consistent simultaneous consideration of multiple hypotheses.
