Abstract

Burn is a complex pathophysiologic phenomenon, which causes both direct tissue damage, such as extensive hemorrhage, and indirect consequences, such as infections due to external skin barrier destruction. Several therapeutic strategies have been implied so far, but none could provide a combined action against direct and indirect consequences of such a common and serious medical condition. Therefore, novel therapeutic approaches should be investigated. TISSEEL™ is a fibrin sealant which simulates the final steps of the coagulation cascade and could be utilized as an alternate treatment for the immediate burn management, especially in areas where specialized burn departments or surgeons are not available. The present study proposes an effective alternative therapeutic strategy for immediate burn injury. In that way, every surgeon even without huge expertise could successfully manage a burn injury and acute consequences could be prevented. However, future experimental studies should be designed in order to further assess the feasibility and safety of the proposed method and to compare it with the available therapeutic options.
