Abstract

A discussion is given of a method by which simple empirical cost formulae may be combined with technological and physical constraints to establish the parameter region of the optimum (i.e. cheapest) machine design, that will meet given experimental objectives. As an illustration of this cost optimization procedure, the technique is applied to the optimization of a 3 MA tokamak.
