Abstract

Colorectal clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) often have to justify their roles and services and demonstrate quality service alongside cost-effective measures. Reducing posts to save costs is a false economy because there is evidence to show that specialist nurses can improve the lives of their patients and deliver value for money ( Royal College of Nursing, 2013 ). This body of evidence is growing as nursing stakeholders and frontline nurses continue to make the economic case for specialist nurses in both the community and hospital setting. A range of products and accessories are available for stoma patients, and it is important that patients receive the best care and appropriate choice of products and accessories. In this paper, the author describes an audit of stoma-prescribing practices in Wales and the effect of individualised patient reviews on both patients and the health economy.
