Abstract

A single high dose of liposomal amphotericin B deoxycholate (L-AmB) given alongside 14 days of flucytosine and fluconazole offers equivalent efficacy and superior safety over the previous WHO-recommended treatment for HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis (ie, 1 week of AmB plus flucytosine followed by 1 week of high-dose fluconazole).1 Despite being more expensive than the WHO-recommended regimen, the analysis conducted by David Lawrence and colleagues in The Lancet Global Health2 shows that the new regimen is a cost-effective advancement in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
