Abstract

High power level 3 fast charging is gradually being adopted and provided through off-board charging stations similar to gas stations. High initial infrastructure cost and availability in only certain locations are barriers, which prevent deployment of these stations. The alternative solutions, which can alleviate the problems associated with off-board chargers, are on-board chargers, which can charge EV/PHEV directly from three phase public outlets. In contrary, on-board chargers would bring additional cost, space, and weight due to their added power electronic components. In this manuscript, two cost-effective on-board charger solutions, which take advantage of readily built-in motor inverter and windings of propulsion machine are proposed. The provided detailed analysis verify that low battery current ripple, high unity power factor and low total harmonic distortion (THD) can be achieved with essential EV/PHEV power electronic components and add-on filter inductors.
