Abstract

Tea is the most important industry of Assam. More than 50% of India's tea production is produced in Assam. Assam tea plays a dominant role in India's domestic as well as foreign market. Tea is the principle cash crop of India. It occupies the first position among the plantation crops of India. India ranks first in tea production within 680 million kg or 50% of the world's total. Tea has also been regarded in India as the most important earner of Foreign Exchange. Today Tea is grown in almost 40 countries in different parts of the world within India, China, Sri-Lanka, Kenya, Indonesia and Vietnam being the leading producers. Russia, Great Britain, Pakistan, USA and Japan are the main consuming countries. The tea growing districts of Assam Valley, according to importance, are Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Darrang, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Goalpara and Kamrup. The Cachar district of the Barak Valley contributes 10% of the states tea production. This research is conducted to find out the Cost and Profitability of Production of per kg made tea.
