Abstract

Standard control programs and a ronnel-supplement feed program for control of Haematobia irritans (L.) and Musca autumnalis De Geer were used under large herd-large pasture conditions. Cost accounts showed the following per cow-calf unit: $1.07 for free-choice backrubbers, $0.98 for 5 toxaphene sprays, and $7.58 for 214 days of feeding ronnel supplement. The only method that produced satisfactory control of horn flies without supplementary control measures was usage of sprays. Control of the horn fly with ronnel supplement was erratic during each of the years this product was tested. Use of free-choice backrubbers without a supplementary spray produced little if any control. Ronnel supplement provided additional benefits by reducing the levels of face flies and eliminating cattle grubs in the herd in which this program was tested. No control program produced significant control of lice during the following winter.
