I first took the internal medicine boards 50 years ago (actually 48) when the ABIM gave a written examination followed months later by an oral examination for those who had passed the written. I “failed to pass” the oral examination and had to wait a year before I could make another attempt. Rumbling was increasing about the lack of validity of the oral examination.
