Abstract

Details are presented of the construction of a cosmic ray spectrograph utilising a solid iron magnet and flash tube detectors. The instrument has been oriented to accept muons incident near the geomagnetic north-south direction with zenith angles close to 80°. Some 11 500 usable single events have been obtained, and a description is given of the analysis of the data. Detailed consideration of the various instrumental corrections has enabled the muon spectrum in the energy range 4–500 GeV to be determined. The data have been interpreted in terms of both kaon and pion parentage of muons and are found to be consistent with an upper limit of 0.4 for the K/ π ratio. There is no evidence for the direct production of muons as reported by Bergeson et al.
