Abstract
Endocrine Disruptor Chemicals (EDCs) are chemicals that may produce harmful effects by interfering with the hormonal system. There is an increasing concern regarding the presence of endocrine disruption chemicals (EDCs) in cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs). The use of cosmetics is a personal choice in some cases, while can be linked to specific preventive and therapeutical needs, such as for atopic dermatitis or oncological patients. There is sufficient scientific evidence confirming exposure to suspected EDCs through cosmetics. However, the information associating this exposure with harmful human health effects is much more limited, with a clear gap particularly for vulnerable groups. EDCs are not universally regulated yet; therefore, informing health professionals and practitioners, and educating the population on the precautionary principle, are the options to reduce individual exposure levels, especially on vulnerable population groups. A combine effort from manufactures, professionals and informed users may minimize the presence of and exposure to suspected EDCs in cosmetics.
