Abstract

The results of this study support the hypothesis that several organisms that are capable of utilizing CO are also capable of degrading CO-like compounds, such as COS. Three organisms,Peptostreptococcus productus,Rhodospirillum rubrum, andEubacterium limosum, were shown to metabolize COS at rates much higher than that of the reaction of COS with H2O.Clostridium lJungdahlii, on the other hand, was not found to have an ability to degrade COS. H2S was detected as a maJor gas-phase product, but stoichiometric product yields have not yet been determined. Index Entries: Carbonyl sulfide; degradation; bacteria; synthesis gas; CO-utilizing bacteria.
