Abstract

Abstract A description is provided for Corynebacterium fascians [Rhodococcus fascians] . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: On a wide range of hosts; Stapp (40: 584) lists members of 30 genera belonging to 18 families, but only 2 are monocotyledons including pea, chrysanthemum and strawberry. DISEASE: Fasciation of sweet pea, leafy gall of Chrysanthemum and other plants. The pathogen induces the development at soil level of many buds or short, thick, distorted stems with misshapen leaves. The outgrowths may superficially resemble galls. Economic losses occur mainly on ornamentals. Cauliflower disease of strawberry is produced by the combined action of this organism and a nematode (38: 218). GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: North America and Northern Europe (CMI Map 426). Some records before 1936 may have been confused with Agrobacterium tumefaciens (CMI Descript. 42), which was then thought to cause this disease. TRANSMISSION: The pathogen is soil borne and is also transmitted on the seed coat and on plant cuttings.
