Abstract

Summary Seventy-eight bacterial strains isolated from various clinical materials were examined for their basic characteristics, i. e. satellite growth in the vicinity of Staphylococcus aureus colonies. The growth appears to depend on utilisation of organic or inorganic sulphur, but not on factors X and V. The bacterium is an aerobic Gram-positive rod of typical coryneform shape with metachromatic granules. On the basis of various physiological and genomic characteristics this group of bacteria is described as Corynebacterium accolens sp. nov. The type strain is CNCTC Th 1/57.
