Abstract

Radioactive cortisol and total plasma radioactivity were measured seriatim following a single intra-arterial injection of [4- 14C]cortisol into freshwater North American eels. Half-lives, metabolic clearance rates, and volumes of distribution were determined for authentic [4- 14C]cortisol and for total radioactivity. The basal secretion rate for cortisol was estimated as ranging from 1.3 to 2.6 μg/kg bodywt/hr. Cortisol dynamic in eels are considered in relation to the metabolism of adrenocortical steroids in other representative vertebrates.
