Abstract

One day after division of the pituitary stalk or removal of the medial hypothalamus, E. coli lipopolysaccharide B injected intraperitoneally produced a small but significant rise of plasma corticosterone in rats. Sham-adrenalectomy under ether anesthesia failed to change the plasma corticosterone level of rats after removal of the medial hypothalamus. It is suggested that some of the pathways through which E. coli endotoxin releases corticotrophin bypass the medial hypothalamus. (Endocrinology 88: 412, 1971)
