Abstract

Freeze—fracture replicas of fertilized and unfertilized Spisula eggs demonstrate a heterogeneous distribution of intramembranous particles within the plasmalemma. There is a structural reorganization of microvilli and an approximate twofold increase in particles on the protoplasmic face of the plasma membrane following insemination. These transformations in microvillar structure and intramembranous particle number may be involved in establishing a block to polyspermy.
