Abstract

Corruption is a phenomenon that is currently generating a lot of concern globally, especially in a country such as Nigeria, where it is highly prevalent. It has been the harbinger of the messy situation Nigeria finds itself in today, particularly in development terms. Incontrovertibly, corruption has gained recognition as a multi-dimensional, all-pervading phenomenon with multiple manifestations and consequences for the entire population. The hallmark of the criminal justice system is punishing the offender, based on utilitarian grounds. A serious hindrance to the success of any anti-corruption efforts is a corrupt criminal justice institution. When corruption is involved in this sector, it fundamentally impedes the function of administering criminal justice. The wide effect of corruption on the criminal justice system is not only harmful but destructive when the justice sector, which should embody the principle of independence, impartiality, integrity and equality, is undermined. This chapter examines how corruption affects the police, courts and correctional services, as the main components of the criminal justice system.
