Abstract

Corrugated fibreboard, the most used material for transport packaging, is moisture sensitive and therefore its performance is highly influenced by the moisture content. This paper examines the shock absorption under a range of humidity and temperature conditions and the appropriateness of a model for moisture sorption/desorption isotherms for corrugated fibreboard. A range of corrugated fibreboard materials was investigated by first conditioning samples using proximity cells, testing samples for impact absorption using a small scale cushion tester and modelling moisture sorption/desorption isotherms. Results show that the shock absorption is directly influenced by static loading, humidity and temperature and that isotherms can easily fit a widely accepted model.
