Abstract

Corrosion resistance and improved adhesion properties of propargyl alcohol (PA) impregnated mesoporous titanium dioxide (M-TiO2) built-in epoxy zinc rich primer (ZRP) have been studied using various techniques. The impregnation of propargyl alcohol in mesoporous TiO2 has been confirmed using FT-IR spectrometer, the thermal behaviour of the PA impregnated mesoporous TiO2 has been analysed by TGA & DSC, the structure of the mesoporous TiO2 has been analysed using SEM, XRD and Laser Raman Spectroscopy. Adhesion of the coated panels was tested as per the ASTM Standard D4541. The anticorrosive property of the ZRP coatings was evaluated using deionized water, 3% NaCl solution and Salt spray tests. The Open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance studies were carried out on steel substrate coated with ZRP, M-TiO2 built-in ZRP and propargyl alcohol impregnated M-TiO2 built-in ZRP in 3% NaCl solution. The results of the study reveals that PA impregnated M-TiO2 built-in Zinc rich primer coating possesses both anticorrosive and improved adhesion properties.
