Abstract

The combination of a coating technique such as evaporation with a beam of highly energetic ions from an ion source (ion beam assisted deposition) allows the deposition of layers with special features with respect to corrosion protection. Corrosion measurement results of two model systems, Al and Si films on iron substrates, are presented and the function of simultaneous ion bombardment is discussed. The most striking effects are reduction of microporosity and enhancement of adhesion.
