Abstract

Superconducting wires (SWs) were previously prepared in our group byheat treatment of bismuth-based superconductor coatings on a metal core. This paper presents an analysis of the corrosion process by some atmosphericagents on the SWs. SWs with different concentrations of a(Bi, Pb)-2223 phase have been exposed to water vapour saturated air, to purewater vapour or to dry carbon dioxide. Each of these atmospheric agents wasfound to act differently on the SWs. However, all the studied corrosionprocesses present a high sensitivity to the concentration of the (Bi, Pb)-2223phase. For a higher concentration of this phase, the SWs are lesssensitive to atmospheric agents.
