Abstract

The inhibitive action of a sorbitol/diethylenetriamine condensation (SDC) product toward carbon steel corrosion in saturated Ca(OH)2 solution containing 3.5% NaCl was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), surface morphological observations, and quantum chemical calculations. The results indicate that the addition of SDC can effectively decrease the corrosion current densities of the carbon steel and increase the pitting corrosion potential suggesting that the local corrosion induced by Cl(superscript -) is strongly restricted by the inhibitor, which acts as a mixed type inhibitor. In the studied concentration range, the inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in inhibitor concentration. The overall inhibition behavior of SDC is attributed to the stabile adsorption film formd by the dominantly physical adsorption on the carbon steel surface according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.
