Abstract

Abstract A modified linear polarization technique for measuring corrosion rates was developed by normalizing polarization resistance measurements by a single weight loss determination at the end of a run. The normalization procedure makes unnecessary the independent determination (from polarization measurements) of Tafel constants for the two partial reactions and, hence, simplifies considerably the experimental measurements. Results for iron and mild steels in various solutions demonstrate that corrosion rates obtained with the modified technique agree within 5 to 10% with rates determined by the linear polarization method.
