Abstract

Titanium undergoes severe localised corrosion in non-aqueous media in the presence of applied stress and crevices. A study was carried out on the behaviour of Ti in (non-alcoholic) non-aqueous media by testing the electrochemical properties and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of titanium in such solvents as ethyl ether, acetic acid and acetic anhydride. The possibility of predicting the conditions of occurrence of stress corrosion cracking of titanium by means of polarization curves has been confirmed by simply scrutinizing when the corrosion potential is more positive than breakdown potential. A mechanism for the corrosion of titanium in organic solvents has been put forward.
