Abstract
Abstract The presence of xcess quantities of phosphoric acid in a high temperature process stream led to severe corrosion of type 316L stainless steel plant equipment. Lahoratory tests were conducted at 200 and 25°C in the syrupy liquid ohtained hy prolonged heatingof concentrated phosphoric acid. The tests confirmed the high corrosion rates on 316L and determined the rates for 39 other metals and alloys. Copper alloys (particularly cupronickels) and high nickel alloys (particularly Ni–28Mo) demonstrated much better resistance than 316L, as did the following pure metals: platinum, tantalum, molyhdenum, and silrer. Ferrous alloys, zirconium, lead, titanium, and aluminium were found to have extremely high corrosion rates.
