Abstract

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can be used to additively manufacture magnesium(Mg)-based biodegradable materials. However, the influence of the processing parameters on the microstructure and consequent corrosion behaviour of bulk pure Mg fabricated by LPBF needs to be investigated. Electrochemical measurements and mass loss tests were carried out to evaluate the corrosion resistance of Mg components manufactured by LPBF. It was found that the laser-introduced defects initiated localised corrosion and lowered the overall corrosion resistance. Loosely fused Mg materials had high corrosion susceptibility. Hence, the processing parameters should be carefully selected to obtain favourable corrosion resistance of Mg manufactured by LPBF.
