Abstract

Studies on the oxidation behavior of sensitized austenitic AISI 304 stainless steel were carried out in moist and dry CO 2 and in CO 2 with traces of H 2S in the temperature range 473–673 K. The reaction process resulted in parabolic kinetics. The oxidation rate was appreciably higher in CO 2 with H 2S than in either the dry CO 2 or the moist CO 2. A strongly adherent scale of the nature (Fe, Ni, Cr) 1−xO was found to form on the specimen surface in moist and dry CO 2.
