Abstract

Fe-40Cr alloy was implanted with boron and phosphorus ions of various doses at 150 keV. Electrochemical tests were used to investigate the passivation behavior of implanted specimens in deaerated reducing acid solutions. The potentiodynamic measurements indicated that the phosphorus ions were more effective than boron ions in improving the corrosion resistance of Fe-40Cr alloy in sulfuric acid. Furthermore, high doses of phosphorus implantation (10 17ions/cm 2) induced spontaneous passivation of the Fe-40Cr alloy in 1N H 2SO 4 solution. This behavior was explained in terms of the effect of P ions on the hydrogen exchange current density in sulfuric acid solution. However, boron and phosphorus ions were found to be ineffective in promoting self-passivation of the Fe-40Cr alloy in 1N HCl solution.
