Abstract

Corrosion behavior of glassy Ti 41.5Zr 2.5Hf 5Cu 42.5Ni 7.5Si 1 (numbers indicate at.%) alloy in 3 mass% NaCl, 1N HCl and 1N H 2SO 4 solutions was studied by immersion test and electrochemical measurements. The glassy alloy was spontaneously passivated in the acids and brine, although pitting corrosion occurred by anodic polarization at higher potential for the alloy in the Cl −-containing solutions. The passive current densities were of the order of 10 −3 A/m 2 in the NaCl and HCl solutions and was around 10 −1 A/m 2 in the H 2SO 4 solution. The immersion test indicated low corrosion rates of the order of 10 −3 mm/year for the glassy Ti 41.5Zr 2.5Hf 5Cu 42.5Ni 7.5Si 1 alloy in the solutions.
