The complete ‘Data analysis’ section is given below. Data analysis Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS/PC ver. 19.0. Descriptive analysis was used to describe general subject characteristics and major variables. To compare baseline data homogeneity in the case and control groups, multivariate analyses, including multinominal logistic regression analysis and multivariate analysis of variance (manova) and univariate analysis, including analysis of variance (anova) and Chi-square test, were used. To identify times when changes in individual vital signs and CART scores became prominent in the case group and to compare temporal patterns of changes in vital signs and CART scores over the 48-hour study periods in the case and control groups, time plots derived from time series analysis were examined. In addition, analysis of covariance (ancova) and post-hoc comparisons (Turkey's method) were used to determine whether the mean values of 48-hour vital signs and CART scores of the case group were significantly different from those of the two control groups.
