These have been deleted from the online version: In addition to his work with leprosy, Mr Sasakawa has established other health and humanitarian initiatives, including improving the quality of life of people with disabilities; providing support for disaster preparedness and relief work; improving access to health care and eliminating poverty; supporting senior citizens and care for the elderly, including promotion of home health care and visiting nursing services; and providing paediatric medical assistance to victims of the Chernobyl disaster. Active in supporting peace-building in Myanmar, he became the Japanese Government Goodwill Ambassador for the Welfare of the National Races in Myanmar in 2012 and Special Envoy of the Government of Japan for National Reconciliation in Myanmar in 2013. Nominated by the Japanese Nurses Association, Mr Sasakawa will be presented with the award at the ICN Quadrennial Congress in Barcelona, Spain from 27 May to 1 June 2017 (www.icncongress.com). The award, created in 2000, recognizes significant humanitarian contributions and achievements in the domain of health and human rights. The award recipient is a non-nurse who shares the goals and values of nursing in the promotion of health and human rights, has realized a truly significant contribution or achievement in health and human rights and has significant public stature and profile internationally. Previous recipients are Sadako Ogata, former High Commissioner for the United Nations for Refugees; Stephen Lewis, former United Nations Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa; and Mary Robinson, former President of the Republic of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
