Vertical motion fields at OO UT and 12 UT for the months of December 1958 through May 1959, drawn and discussed in this paper as applying to the region over and around North America, actually apply to central Asia and northern Europe. The exact area is shown in Fig. 6 (revised) for 00 UT May 1959, and represents a rotation through 180° of longitude from the area of the original figures. In addition, the numerical values shown in the maps and discussed in the text are microbars/second, which must be multiplied by 1.27 to obtain centimeters/second, at 600 mb.
