• Discrete calcite minerals in red mud are potentially associated with Sc. • Comparative bioleaching amenabilities of German and Indian red mud by G. oxydans . • Approx. 83–94% Sc recovery in 18–20 d from red mud. • Gluconic acid assisted in Sc release from the calcium matrix. • Post bioleach residue enriched with zirconium silicate matrix.
