Abstract

I write with reference to the article Assessment of the RPE as a Measure of Cardiovascular Fitness in Patients with Low Back Pain by Finucane et al (vol.12(3), p.106, 2005). This is a sensible and rigorously designed study aimed at giving chronic low back pain patients and practitioners a simple and valid tool by which to determine the intensity of exercise that is required to achieve a training effect. The use of such a tool is certainly appealing within today's health-care environment, where consultations for low back pain are rising, despite growing evidence for the encouragement of self-management and individual progression.
