Abstract
During the middle of the First World War, Li Yan (1892-1963) and David Eugene Smith (1860-1944) exchanged nearly twenty letters chiefly concerning plans for a collaboration to produce a book in English on the history of Chinese mathematics. Although this idea did not come to fruition, these letters are nevertheless interesting for documenting the early stages in historical research on the history of Chinese mathematics.
