Abstract

It has been said that ‘letters are the soul of trade’. Once upon a time this might have been true, but it would probably not be an exaggeration to say that the spate of letters and memoranda that nowadays pours in on us from all sides is one of the curses of present‐day industry and commerce. Much of it probably has it origin in the greater feeling of distrust that now seems to surround us all. Years ago men's verbal statements were frequently believed—nowadays everyone rushes to express themselves in the written word so that they can wave a miserable piece of paper in the face of their accusers!
